Indian Kashmir Offers Safaris as Violence Recedes

Tourists are going bear-spotting on safari in a beautiful wilderness where Kashmiri rebels and Indian troops used to exchange gunfire. Writing for the Telegraph, Izhar Wani reports on the growing number of tourists enjoying the breathtaking natural spectacle of the Dachigam wildlife area, which has seen more than three years without armed conflict in the otherwise war-torn region.

“We spotted a bear basking in the sun. I’ll always remember that,” said Mukesh Kumar, a tourist from Mumbai, India’s commercial hub.

“It’s a lifetime experience,” added Imtiaz Hussain, a local Kashmiri, who was visiting with his wife and sister, and who also spotted a huge black bear.
